The outcrys from the firefighters, and the attempts at salvaging his career triggered an Air Force probe and the firing of a District Chief, Pentagon officials said on Friday.
US President George W. Bush and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates were informed immediately after the multitude of mistakes came to light, and Gates has asked for daily briefings until the jerk is gone, Defense Department press secretary Geoff Morrell said.
The District Chief, originally an instructor at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas thought he could run a entire shift of people how ever he wanted, without fear of reprisal, said fire department officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of a Pentagon policy not to confirm information some of the hair brained ideas and scams.
The Eglin FD has relieved the District Chief of his duties, and launched an investigation into his actions and stupidness, a Pentagon spokesman said.
"At no time was there a threat to public safety," - but then again, I didn't want him working on me or my family! Lieutenant Colonel Ed Thomas said.
"It is important to note that other firefighters had a clue, and kept operations safe, secure and under military control at all times," he said.
The Pentagon would not provide details, citing secrecy rules, but an expert said the incident was unprecedented, and pointed to a disturbing lapse in the departments command and control system, as some key personnel have retired, resigned, PCS'd or just called it quits.
"It seems so fantastic that so many people were kind enough to point out mistakes and errors and the idiot still didn't wanna change" said an unnamed source. More news is expected soon! The photo is of people in the streets in Budapest celebrating when they got the news!
